This video essay was part of the Design our Way out of Design module at St.Joost.
Using a polaroid is a learning curve. Every time you capture a photo, you have a different result. So many things need to be corrected before the camera user starts getting used to the tool in hand. Similarly, opening up a store is a learning curve. It takes time and effort for the owner to understand his relationship with this newly owned space, his relationship with his customers, and his customers' relationship with him and his freedom.
Working on this project allowed me to question my position as a designer. And how important it is to take permission before barging into someone else's space to "practice design." I (and my collaborators) had to answer questions and deal with shop owners' discomforts and hesitations.
